HIKING ON O'AHU

HIKING ON O'AHU

Hiking is a must do activity for anyone on the island of O'ahu. There are hundreds of different hikes for all levels of adventure and madness.

Here are a few that we have done...

1. Haiku Stairs

Haiku stairs better known as the stairway to heaven is one of the most famous hikes in the world. However being on the stairs in trespassing and it is illegal and they take it pretty seriously with a  guard on duty almost 24/7 and a fine of $1000 if you get caught. Nevertheless people still do it.

We started the hike from the back through the Moanalua valley. The trail start is pretty straight forward with a around an hour hike into a forest, you eventually get a dead end where you cross the river and look for the tree that says the "Middle Ridge" follow that path.

The path takes you up the valley.

It can get very narrow at some points but there are ropes to help you up, they are very necessary if it's wet.

At the end of the trail you will see the radio tower, this is the top of the stairs. After seeing what all the fuss is about (It is a fuss, v cool) you can choose to walk all the way down the stairs and risk the fine or go back the way you came in the pouring rain down a narrow ridge on your hand and knees and risk your life.

We decided our lives weren't that important and went back the way we came, this blog is up so clearly we survived.

We met some local people that took the stairs and said the guard is chill you just need to be quiet and respectful in the neighbourhood because apparently it is the people in the houses that phone the police, not the guard.

You also have the option of paying guy called "mountain man matt" that we met at the beach to take you up for $200, he knows the guard or something and makes you lunch up at the top. Nice guy but we didn't do that.

2. Pu'u Ohia Trail (Tantalus Tower)

Drive up Mt Tantalus until you see the trail start. Hike about 20 minutes to through a bamboo forest, there are wild boar kicking about so take a stick incase one comes at you.

Once you reach the end of the trail you get to Telephone Rd head left and up the hill and you will see the tower.

There is a hole in the back of the fence.

Photos really do not do the place justice.

Would recommend going for sunset and if you go on a Friday night you can watch the fireworks from the Hilton in Waikiki

3. Pu'u' Ohulu Kai (Pink Pill Box)

This is a short hike on the west shore easy enough to take a kid on. Take around 40 minutes to get to the top, its nice.

4. Pu'u Piei Makai

This hike is directly across from the more well known crouching lion hike over looking Kahana bay. We didn't know what we were getting ourselves into with this hike. You will get bitten alive by bugs so wear long trousers.

If you want to get to the every top, you need to be a bit of a nutcase. Mad scenes though.

5. Makua Cave

Short hike again on the west shore over looking Makua Beach.

Makua beach is one of the most seclueded beaches on the island, would recommend going there too.

6. Koko Head

The hike is short but brutal and extremely touristy. Hate to be negative but there are much better ones on the island.

View is like a 5/10

7. 'Ehukai Pill Box

Short hike on the North shore takes around 40 minutes and over looks some of the world's best surf breaks (in winter).
This hike is extremely slippy if it has been raining, went flying twice, bad for me, funny for everyone else.

Hope this is useful for anyone that is interested, there are literally endless amounts of hikes to do on the island but thats just a few that we have done.

Happy hiking, try not to die.
