WHAT TO DO - BIG ISLAND HAWAII

WHAT TO DO - BIG ISLAND

As you might have guessed Big island is the biggest island of the Hawaiian islands and is continuously growing as its volcanos continue to erupt. There are endless amounts of adventure on the Big island, so here are some of the best things to do.

1. Volcano
There are numerous ways of seeing lava on the island.

An open door helicopter tour will set you back around $350 but is a once in a life time experience and would be well worth it. You need to book well in advance so unfortunately we didn't get too do this.
A boat tour is around $200 and is also meant to be cool or you can go to the volcano national park and walk across the lava fields for free, we were told to stay after dark as the place glows up.

When we were there the volcano was pretty much off limits because it was properly going off so we never seen any lava, only the glow which was still cool.

2. Cliff jumping
South Point
The most southernly point of the USA. The wooden frame you jump from was used to drop small boats in to the ocean.
End of the World
Located just south of Kona. Lots of different spots to jump here, high, low, left, right, out a tree, whatever you want.
12 Tons Bridge
Located on the 4 mile "scenic route" in Hilo. The bridge only holds 12 tons, hence the name.
Puueo Bridge
This bridge is high.
This video says it all...

3. Snorkelling
There are a million tours in Hawaii that will sell you snorkelling tours for around $150 but its not the same if you are on a tour. A better alternative is just to go to a local snorkelling shop like Snorkel Bobs and rent snorkels. For 24 hours it was $10 and we went and found some fish ourself. There are a few places mainly on the Kona side of the island (West) that are great for snorkelling.....
Two step
We went here at 4.30pm ten minutes after we had just rented our snorkelling gear and seen dolphins straight away. We swam amongst around 30 spinner dolphins for about 40 minutes they were every friendly. This was one of the most surreal experiences of my life.

There was a turtle (Honu in Hawaiian)  kicking about as well but thats rubbish compared the dolphins.

Captain Cook
If you go down here for around 6am there is a good chance you will be able to swim with dolphins. This is where all the tours take you but the tour boats arrive in at around 7.30. Even if you don't see dolphins the snorkelling here is unreal. The reef is a protected area so there are heaps of mad fish.

The Marina Kona
I have never personally been here but we were told that scuba diving in the Marina is amazing for seeing tiger sharks. At night, tours also gather here for the manta ray night dive. They bring lights to attract plankton and you can watch the Manta Rays feed on the plankton. We never got to do this but it was recommend to us on numerous occasions.

Big island is definitely one of the coolest places I've ever been.
