HIDDEN JUNGLE WATERSLIDE - WHITE ROAD HIKE
WHITE ROAD HIKE
This hike was so sick that we actually done it twice. It is definitely one of the best things to do if you are on the Big Island of Hawaii. The hike is considered trespassing and so it is illegal, if you get caught you will get cited and have a date in court. #YOLO.
We left our treehouse in Hilo at around 4.30am (We had to give the rental car back by 10).
Head to Waimea in the north of the island, its about a 1 hour drive.
(Wouldn't recommend staying in a treehouse, it was in the middle of nowhere and very scary at night)
White Road is where you park, the hike starts at the top of the road, don't park right at the top. The road has houses on it, with dogs, the dogs are mental, reckon they could eat you, so be prepared.
Once you get to this gate at the end of the road, hop it and just follow the path. This land is private and we were told that there are often guys trying to make money off of people trying to do the hike, if you see someone just go up and be friendly they shouldn't be a problem. Alternatively, get up early and hike in the morning, sunrise is amazing anyway.
You will then reach another gate, after this gate it is government property this is where it is actually illegal. Continue to follow the path it is quite obvious where you need to go. If you get lost just follow the aqueduct.
The "slide" is part of an old irrigation system. It was built in Hawaii's plantation days to re route water to the sugarcane fields.

The path will then eventually lead you to here...
This is the Waipio Valley.
Follow the path round and cross the aqueduct.
Then you have a choice. You can take the long way and walk round the mountain or you can take the short way and go through the tunnel. We have done both. Apparently the overland route is sketchy but we couldn't see how big the top off was because of the clouds so it didn't feel scary. Tunnel is more fun anyway.
The water in tunnel is waist height at points, check the weather before you do this because being in here during a flash flood would be less than ideal.
The tunnel is made up of three parts and takes around 20 minutes to get through, you can't see anything so you will need a torch.
At the end of the tunnel you come out to the slide...
The "slide" is part of an old irrigation system. It was built in Hawaii's plantation days to re route water to the sugarcane fields.
There is a rope at the side to help you up.
The slide is much bigger and faster than you think when you get there.
The pool at the bottom is deep enough, you will touch the bottom but you just kick off it and pop back up.
You can easily spend hours here but it gets quite cold so bring extra clothes and towels.
Floaties are essential but they will probably burst eventually.
If you see anyone on the way back out just smile and walk on, they can't tell you to undo all the fun you just had.
